1988 560 SL rich mixture

1988 560sl
I go about 15 miles and black smokes starts and gets progressively worse,
and shuts off. About 2 or 3 minutes I t does the same thing again.
have cleaned fuel system, new fuel pump and new air filter.
I need some help on this one.

Start with mechanical basics

I recommend before you do anything else you check engine vacuum and compression. This will give you an quick indication of just how healthy your engine is. If the timing chain is stretched and your cam timing is way off, this can affect fuel delivery. Low compression figures can cause excess mixture problems as well. Check your spark plugs - are they oil soaked or are they covered in black soot from excess fuel? If the engine checks out ok - then you need to have the fuel injection system properly pressure tested before you spend any more money on parts. You just may have a problem with your fuel distributor and that is a very expensive unit. Post back what you find out.

Thanks, I will check all the mentioned items, I'll have a shop I use check the fuel system. The engine only has 30k mi. on it since dealer installed a new engine and runs very strong until this happens.
Could a shorted O2 sensor cause this or a control unit that gets too hot????????????
