I first came across Mary Jane, originally a 1967 250S, in the spring of 1998. Back in those days we bought a lot of cars for parts and restoration projects for resale. My dad would give me a list of cars he was interested in buying, and I would head out on a day long road trip to check them out and then report back to the boss as to their condition. Well little did I know that I would find my own diamond in the rough that day! I cruised down 1-5 that morning in my trusty 300TD wagon, heading south towards Skagit Valley, WA. I had come across an ad for an old 108 that some folks were looking to sell for parts. We figured it might be a good purchase for chrome bumpers, etc.. I got off the freeway and started to head way out into the farmlands. After miles of driving I finally found the place and pulled in. The farmer took me out to an old dilapidated barn, where Mary Jane was sitting up on blocks. Now I tell you that when he opened that barn door I took one look at her and knew that she would be mine. It had been his sons car who had big dreams for her but never followed through. Where she sat, the head was off the engine, body had some minor rust, but it had a very nice burgandy interior. But there was a battery hooked up in the engine compartment and when I turned the key and the power sunroof worked, that was the clincher! So I wrote the guy a business check for $ 500.00 and told him I would be back the next day with a car trailer. Now I just had to figure out how to tell my Dad I had spent his money and had signed him up to spend the next day towing my new car!! Good thing I am such a good daughter......
