This DIY job is very important for a number of reasons. Changing the fluid and the filter every 40k to 50k will extend the life of your power steering pump and steering rack. Changing out the reservoir will allow you to replace the seal between the tank and the pump. This seal seems to always start leaking between 100K to 120K. And, if you need to replace the oil cooler seal, the tank has to come off.

This kit includes the following:

  • New fluid tank ( with built-in filter)
  • New tank to pump seal
  • Big syringe extractor with a hose to remove old fluid from the tank
  • Fluid flush hose with 3/8 inch coupler to connect to the return hose
  • Silicone plug to seal the tank while flushing the system
  • New hose clamp for the return to tank hose
  • Long torx bit to get to the screws holding the tank to the block
  • Kent's special tools to extract and install the big C-clip 
  • Zip ties
  • Nitrile gloves
  • *Video instructions.

*Video instructions will focus on removing the power steering reservoir and flushing the fluid, as that is the most difficult job. This is shown on a W272 V6, but the procedures are the same when servicing the GL 273 V8. A bonus video is included showing Kent get the air out of the power steering system on a 2004 SL500 ( procedure would be the same as required on the GL)

NOTE: If you are replacing your GL power steering tank, it is a good time to replace the oil cooler seal, since the tank has to be removed to remove the oil cooler. See our full kit below, or you can purchase the oil cooler seal separately.

Kent's special tools are included to help you get that stubborn C-clip off the underside of the power steering fluid tank. We include a standard hose clamp for the power steering return hose that goes into the side of the tank.

If you don't change this as a preventative measure, you risk mixing coolant and engine oil together!

Of course, you want to change this if you find oil leaking out the bottom onto your drive belt, but it can also leak internally, allowing coolant to get into your engine oil or vice versa. 272273

When removing the upper radiator hose for engine service, such as replacing the electronic thermostat or the seal on the back side of the oil cooler, you will have to remove the upper radiator hose.

1998 to 2012 M112 M113 M272 M283 - 2 Liters Power Steering Fluid

The correct green hydraulic fluid for your 1998 to 2012 power steering pumps - Change the filter tank while you are at it.

This is the Febi Bilstein green 06161 power steering fluid for your M112 and M113 engines. You will need about 1.5 liters to do a complete flush. What about Petosin fluid, you may ask. Watch the video, and Kent explains why he uses this fluid as a direct replacement.

1998 to 2011 Gas V6 and V8 Power Steering Reservoir Tank Clip Removal Tool Set

For M112, M113, M272, and M273 Engines WITH a Power Steering Reservoir on the left front side of the engine.

Kent designed this set of tools to easily pry off the C-clip holding the fluid tank onto the power steering pump, AND to put it back on after replacement. This can be nearly impossible without these tools. The clip comes off and goes back on VERY HARD.
